چکیده

This paper develops a new test to evaluate Value at Risk (VaR) forecasts. VaR is a standard risk measure widely utilized by financial institutions and regulators, yet estimating VaR is a challenging problem, and popular VaR forecast relies on unrealistic assumptions. Hence, assessing the performance of VaR is of great importance. We propose the geometric-VaR test which utilizes the duration between the violations of VaR as well as the value of VaR. We conduct a Monte Carlo study based on desk-level data and we find that our test has high power against various

Backtesting Parametric Value-at-Risk with Estimation Risk

One of the implications of the creation of Basel Committee on Banking Supervision was the implementation of Value-at-Risk (VaR) as the standard tool for measuring market risk. Since then, the capital requirements of commercial banks with trading activities are based on VaR estimates. Therefore, appropriately constructed tests for assessing the out-of-sample forecast accuracy of the VaR model (b...

Estimation Risk Effects on Backtesting For Parametric Value-at-Risk Models

One of the implications of the creation of Basel Committee on Banking Supervision was the implementation of Value-at-Risk (VaR) as the standard tool for measuring market risk. Thereby the correct specification of parametric VaR models became of crucial importance in order to provide accurate and reliable risk measures. If the underlying risk model is not correctly specified, VaR estimates under...

Early Detection Techniques for Market Risk Failure

The implementation of appropriate statistical techniques for monitoring conditional VaR models, i.e, backtesting, reported by institutions is fundamental to determine their exposure to market risk. Backtesting techniques are important since the severity of the departures of the VaR model from market results determine the penalties imposed for inadequate VaR models. In this paper we make six con...

Specification Tests in Parametric Value-at-risk Models

One of the implications of the creation of Basel Committee on Banking Supervision was the implementation of Value-at-Risk (VaR) as the standard tool for measuring market risk and of out-of-sample backtesting for banking risk monitoring. We stress in this article that the results derived from this exercise can be spurious if one does not carry out a previous in-sample specification test to deter...

Backtesting Portfolio Value-at-Risk with Estimation Risk

Nowadays the most extensively used risk measure by financial institution is known as Value-at-Risk (VaR), which is defined as the maximum expected loss on an investment over a specified horizon at a given confidence level. To evaluate the accuracy and quality of the out-of-sample VaR forecast (backtesting procedures) is an important issue in practice. The purpose of this paper is to quantify th...
